Oppression, Social Change and Group Relationships
September 4, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Social change initiatives are consistently obstructed by issues of oppression that may seem peripheral to the main agenda. This workshop looks at how societies, communities and groups are divided when oppression goes unaddressed. Practical tools that help heal these divisions will be shared through experiential processes. The workshop will develop understanding of the structural nature of oppression in its diverse forms (racism, sexism, classism, ableism, and the oppression of young people, LBQTI ….etc.) as well as doing personal healing work – both of which are necessary for people to work effectively together. We see this as critical work for constructive social change and community resilience.
This workshop is based on work by Alima Adams and Karl Lam:
Alima Adams: Against Racism, Sexism And Oppression: Uniting Across Divisions To Solve Climate Change
Karl Lam: A framework for understanding exploitative societies
The workshop will take place at at the inner space in Katoomba, 15min walk from the station (address will be provided after registration). Please arrive at 9.00am for a relaxed 9.15am start. June timetables show trains arriving in Katoomba from Sydney at 8.25am and from Lithgow at 8.37am (please check for changes).
